Ice Blocks:
To retrieve the ice blocks, an undetermined area was cut to the water- ice interface by chainsaw. An area surrounding the cut was carefully chiseled to not fracture the sample. Once the sample was free floating, it was removed by ice tongs. At sites 2 and 3, samples were partially broken making it impossible to retrieve the entire sample.
At site 4 the entire sample was removed. It measures 53 cm thick at its longest point with 8 cm of snow ice at its top. The sample was wrapped in cellophane to preserve its integrity. The top and bottom of the sample were also marked for ease of identification.
Note: GPS measurements were taken at each location. The longitude recorded at Site 3 does not correspond well with the other longitudinal positions at the lake and was likely subject to human error. In addition the elevations appear to be suspect. All readings were taken on an essentially flat lake surface, less than 100 meters from each other.
Also, no water temperature was taken at Site 3.
